2. Innovation Statement and Passion

My passion in education makes me feel tireless in extending my hand for student's needs. In between the teaching and learning journey, complaints arise from the stakeholder as well as the student were taken into consideration. We usually hear "student with good result tends to be nerd and could not solve real life problem", in another occasions, phrases like "students nowadays are dependent and worse than our time...". If the comments were to be true, shall we trained the student to get bad results?? As a institute of education, are we facing education crisis?

Innovation Statement

I have made a few simple surveys to identify the weaknesses of current graduate among the stakeholder especially pharmaceutical industry and clinical pharmacy. The current graduate was commented to be dependent, lacking of problem solving skill and good attitude. On student sides, complaints have always been linked to the ultimate culprit of “no time”. Therefore, I my pedagogy has been shaped to combat the issue face by the current graduates to prepare them for the real life.

Before I teach, I asked extra one hour from the classrep just to share my life experience in order to instill human value into the younger generation.

In my teaching, I incorporate concept of student-centered learning and a customized flipped classroom (figure below). I have flipped all my classes which could be found in the course content attached along with this application. I used mentimeter as platform of collaborative activities. The student will post their question in advance before physical class time. During the class, their queries will be cleared, and task will be given to challenge them. On top of that assignment of edutainment is included in one of the courses that I am teaching, i.e biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. The edutainment is a performance that student would present at the end of the 13 weeks to showcase certain topic that they have learnt from the subjects.

In subject of pharmaceutical preparation, I proposed the use of recipe video to ease student learning before the lab session. The recipe video were given at least a week before they entered for lab practical. In the lab, the preparation time start as soon as the student arrive without further demonstration. This has save the time of the students and resolve the issue of lecturer to student ratio during practical demonstration in a big class such as pharmacy courses.

In term of assessment, presentation and report were assessed according to a rubric (as attached). My group and I have realized that there were potential of unequal distribution of report or assignment workload at student level, in order to assess the students fairly, we implemented peer assessment. We developed an assessment tool which has been copyrighted early of this year, and used to reveal the true performances of students. The values that were assessed include and not limited to use of common language, punctuality, teamwork, contribution and etc.

Overall, the innovation used in my teaching focusing on the pedagogy but not merely technology. Though, it is worth mentioning that platform that I have been using include Kahoot!, Mentimeter, Blendspace, eLearn@USM, online quiz, padlet, edpuzzle and etc.
