
THIS COURSE LOOKS INTO INSECTS FROM 5 FUNDAMENTAL PERSPECTIVES: STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION, INSECTS AND ITS ENVIRONMENT, INSECTS AS A UNIT AND ITS DIVERSITY, APPLIED ENTOMOLOGY, AND MODERN MOLECULAR APPROACH. THE SUBJECTS COVERED INCLUDE: THE INTEGUMENT SYSTEM, NERVOUS SYSTEMS, GLANDS AND MUSCLES, BREEDING AND DEVELOPMENT, SENSORY MECHANISMS, MOVEMENT AND BEHAVIOUR. COMMUNICATION BETWEEN INSECTS AND ITS BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC ENVIRONMENT WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSED. IN ADDITION , STUDENTS WILL BE EXPOSED TO THE METHODS AND PRINCIPLES OF TAXONOMY AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE INSECTA CLASS. THIS COURSE WILL ALSO DISCUSS THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF INSECTS, CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY, CONTROL OF INSECTS, AND MOLECULAR ENTOMOLOGY. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO UNDERSTAND THE BASIC PRINCIPLES IN ENTOMOLOGY TO PREPARE THEM FOR APPLIED RESEARCH RELATED TO INSECTS.
