BST405 will cover topics such as the management and sustainable utilization of natural resources such as land, water, soil, plants and animals, with particular focus on how management practices affects the quality of life for both the present and future generations. Specific focuses are on the scientific and technical understanding of resources and ecology, and the life-supporting capacity of those resources.

Natural resource management & conservation issues are inherently complex as they involve the ecological cycles, hydrological cycles, climate, animals, plants and geography etc. All these are dynamic and interrelated. A change in one of them may have far-reaching and/or long-term impacts which may even be irreversible.

By the end of the course, students shall be able to grasp the concept of sustainable development and its implementation in the utilization and management of natural resources.
