COURSE SYNOPSIS:
This course introduces students to aspect of laboratory safety, as well as management and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Students will also be trained to use laboratory equipment such as micropipette, pH meter, balances, microscope, spectrophotometer, chromatography and other common laboratory analytical equipment. This course will also emphasize on the method to handle and dispose dangerous chemicals, use of laboratory plasticware and glassware, sterilization and disinfection, as well as basic laboratory techniques. This course is conducted through lectures, tutorials, practical and discussions. The students are evaluated through tests, final examination, practical reports and assignment.

This course introduces students to advanced immunological concepts, including activation and regulation of lymphocytes and the role of immunological mechanisms in diseases and disorders such as autoimmune, immunodeficiency, HIV infection, transplantation, tumours and pregnancy. Immunological methods including immunoprecipitation and agglutination reactions, ELISA, flow cytometry, and polyclonal antibody production will also be covered. The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, practical, and group discussions. Students will be evaluated through tests, OSPE, group discussions, and a final examination.

WELCOME TO THE GTB408 BIOMEDICAL PRACTICUM COURSE!

COURSE SYNOPSIS:

This course exposes students to the best practice in clinical diagnostic laboratory services for the sustainability of health and quality of life. Students are given opportunities to acquire knowledge and experience as well as to observe, perform, analyze and interpret the test results. Students are also trained to identify and solve problems in laboratory services; implement quality control programs; do troubleshooting and manage the diagnostic laboratory. Students are also provided with knowledge and skills on phlebotomy, knowledge on the “One Health” concept, medical laboratory devices technology, laboratory security or safety system, and good laboratory practice. The course is conducted via practical training and discussion. The students are evaluated through practical tests, discussion, presentation, and logbook (100% coursework).

This course will introduce students to the important skills of a dietitian such as communication, nutrition-focused physical examination, nutritional status assessing screening tools, proper documentation, dietetics clinical case report writing, and presentation skills. The course will also emphasize evidence-based practice and enteral and parenteral nutrition to provide good-quality nutritional intervention for patients. This course will be assessed through test, assignments, and presentations. This course has a final examination which will be conducted at the end of the semester.

This course introduces students to fundamental concept of toxicology, forensic toxicology, poison, multiple poisoned material, chemistry and appearance of poisoned material, multiple procedures, techniques and equipments employed to extract, identify and profile the poisoned material from biological and autopsy specimens. Classification and identification of drugs that commonly abused, modes of action in human body and techniques to identify and detect them will also be emphasized. The course will be taught via lectures and practicals. Students will be assessed through tests, assignments, practical reports, practical test/OSPE and final examination. As this course combines flipped and BLS (blended learning substitutions) classes, students are expected to have already gone through the materials provided beforehand and be prepared for lectures.

This course introduces students to the management of patients from the aspects of medical-surgical nursing related to dermatology, immunology, hematology and oncology disorders towards ensuring healthy lives and improving the well-being of patients and families. It incorporates managing quality of life and end-of-life care through a multi-disciplinary approach. This course will use student-centered teaching and learning approaches: lectures, small group discussions, education visit, e-learning and practical sessions. Students will be assessed through assignments, practical training, presentation and final examination.
