EAK337: Pavement Engineering

Course Objective: To introduce the fundamental of highway engineering that covers route location, drainage, choice of materials, mix design, pavement design, construction and highway maintenance.

Course Synopsis:

- Materials for flexible pavement bound layers: aggregate, binder, and filler.

- Asphalt mixture: type, design and production via continuous and batch methods.

- Pavement design: flexible, regid and comparison.

-Pavement construction: flexible and rigid pavements.

-Pavement Maintenance: Programs and methods

EAL431: Highway Design

Course Objective: To understand highway geometric design method that covers alignment, cross-section, at-grade and grade-separated intersections taking into consideration road safety aspects.

Course Synopsis:

- Introduction: Basic Elements

- Horizontal Elements: Curve types, superelevation

- Vertical Alignment: Summit and Valley Curves

- Cross Section: camber, lane types, and road shoulder.

- At-grade Intersection: types, requirements, sight distance

-Grade separated Intersection: Justification, types, the distance between interchange

- Geometric Design and Road Safety; five stages and elements of road safety audit

 

Type of assessment: Assignment, group project, test, final exam

CO1- Able to apply the appropriate design concepts, principles in highway geometric design and road safety audit

CO2- Able to design elements in highway geometry that covers horizontal, vertical alignments, cross-section and junctions according to standards
