THIS COURSE DISCUSSES THE CELL IN TERMS OF ITS BASIC STRUCTURE, ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTION. IT ALSO INCLUDES BUILDING BLOCKS OF MACROMOLECULES SUCH AS AMINO ACIDS, FATTY ACIDS AND MONOSACCHARIDES. THIS LEADS TO DISCUSSIONS ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF MACROMOLECULES E.G. PROTEINS, FATS, CARBOHYDRATES AND NUCLEIC ACIDS. THE BIOCHEMICAL PROCESSES THAT OCCUR IN THE CELL SUCH AS ENZYMES AS CATALYSTS, CARBOHYDRATE, FAT AND PROTEIN METABOLISM, METABOLIC REGULATION AND BIOSYNTHESIS OF MACROMOLECULES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. AT THE END OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN PROKARYOTE AND EUKARYOTE AS WELL AS NAME THE ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS.
