THIS COURSE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF LITERARY WORKS ASSOCIATED WITH MODERN ENGLISH NOVELS WITHIN THE CHRONOLOGICAL PERIOD OF THE NINETEENTH AND THE TWENTIETH CENTURIES. THE READING OF SELECTED TEXTS BY JANE AUSTEN, CHARLES DICKENS AND W.M. THACKERAY WILL FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS WITH SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND ECONOMIC ISSUES AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH THEMES PERTAINING TO IDENTITY, WEALTH AND POWER. IN TWENTIETH CENTURY NOVELS WRITTEN BY WILLIAM GOLDING, GEORGE ORWELL AND MARGARET DRABBLE, THE STUDENTS WILL CONSIDER HOW THESE AUTHORS ADDRESS ISSUES ABOUT POLITICS, GOVERNMENT AND INDIVIDUALS’QUEST FOR SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE.
